The facility was created by NAC Architecture, which has several offices in the US, and California-based Bernards, a builder and construction management company. The firms worked in collaboration with LA County’s Department of Public Works. Owned by the county, the site formerly held a parking lot and was slated to become a staging area for the construction of a new jail. With some changes in the plan for 2019, ideas began to emerge for using the site as an option for homeless housing. It is estimated that there are at least 60,000 people in the LA area currently struggling with homelessness – a crisis that requires urgent attention and innovative solutions.
To cater to the unique shape of this site, the team created a series of single-story buildings and two multi-level structures.... Repurposed shipping containers, prebuilt wood frames, and mobile units were used as modular components that could be constructed remotely in order to expedite work on this project. “We worked hard to accelerate all design, permitting, and construction processes significantly,” said NAC Architecture due to an increased need for places where those experiencing homelessness can stay during such difficult times like a pandemic.
Spanning an expansive 64,000 square feet (5,946 square meters), the facility was constructed in a mere six months. It provides 232 housing units coupled with a common building encompassing amenities such as an industrial kitchen and laundry facilities along with administrative areas. To top it off, this amazing site also offers landscaped courtyards and a dog park for staff members and occupants alike to enjoy! Parking spots are located onsite too
