In an effort to address the pressing shortage of affordable housing in Dallas, CitySquare, a local nonprofit organization, is pioneering a revolutionary new approach – constructing an apartment complex out of shipping container homes located in Southeast Dallas.
The 19 one-bedroom units of the Housing Project will be situated across from The Cottages at Hickory Crossing, CitySquare’s existing fifty tiny homes for homeless people. These dwellings are rent-restricted to 60% of the Area Median Income and come with utilities inclusive of its $906 monthly fee.... Billy Sims, a current resident of Hickory Crossing, is living proof of the transformational power CitySquare Housing can have on people’s lives. After being homeless for over a year and struggling with various issues such as mental illness, joblessness, and substance abuse, Billy was able to turn his life around thanks to the tiny home he got from the nonprofit organization. The Hickory Crossing project opened in 2016 specifically designed to help combat chronic homelessness in Dallas—a city that currently has one of the largest homeless populations in Texas.

It seems Dallas’s first shipping container bar, The Cedars Backyard, which officially opened and became part of the city’s fabric in 2018, may have set the trend for other restaurants to follow suit. Not only is this location a great place to eat and relax with friends, but it also repurposes old shipping containers into something new and innovative.
The owners of the Cedars Social, Jeffrey Yarbrough, and Chad Boyle, had a revolutionary idea – that Dallas needed something fresh. What was it? A fully functioning bar made from an upcycled shipping container!... Mod Pod Solutions (owned by Joe Duncan) lent a hand in transforming this Tiffany blue recycled shipping container into the charming centerpiece of their outdoor hangout. With bright furniture and picnic tables surrounding it, one can not help but feel welcomed to this unique bar!
Dallas now has an ideal spot to enjoy at a reasonable cost. There are fifteen beers and cocktails on tap, from DEBC Local Legent to Revolver Blood and Honey, Honeysuckle Shandy, or Date Old Fashioned; simply put – it’s the ultimate Sunday Funday place for you having fun over local brews with some backyard games.
