The Auburn University College of Agriculture, in collaboration with Campus Dining, is pushing the boundaries by utilizing recycled shipping containers as state-of-the-art hydroponic “vertical” farms to cultivate produce for students. To achieve this feat, two Freight Farms shipping containers were acquired and innovatively transformed into soilless growing stations that utilize water and LED lights to nurture plants vertically indoors. Not only has this novel idea introduced a more sustainable way of growing food but it also presents an opportunity for students to enjoy locally sourced goods on campus daily!... Daniel Wells, an Associate Professor of Horticulture, taught a vertical farming course and is now in charge of the operations. The containers have been outfitted with state-of-the-art climate control systems that include air conditioning and humidity regulation to provide the plants with consistent temperatures all year round. Additionally, there’s also an advanced lighting system made up of two color LEDs which delivers enough light for growth and flourishing! By regulating carbon dioxide levels, the containers built by Freight Farms enable significantly accelerated plant growth. This Boston-based company is present in 45 states and 28 countries around the world.

Eight years ago, when the construction industry began to deteriorate, an Alabama couple decided to take a leap of faith. They sold their steel building company in Florida and seized the opportunity for a fresh start by relocating to Oneonta with land already owned that summer in 2009. The ambitious couple then constructed their 2000-square-foot home out of four 40-foot-long shipping containers from Miami’s port and one extra container exclusively used for storage unit purposes.
Bryan diligently transported the containers, steel beams, and other necessary items from Fort Myers, Fla. to build their unique home. The leftover steel used in construction was also sourced from past projects back in Florida.... It’s no wonder then that shipping container structures were chosen for their abode: they are strong, sustainable, and cost-effective building blocks!
