John Cohorst and Holly Kranker, who recently received a Public Impact Grant, took the next step in their CAR>GO project by making an important delivery. They plan to renovate a generously donated shipping container as the physical base for this innovative concept – Community Activated Resource on the GO. This mobile shared workspace will be used by artists, architects, designers, and engineers alike to collaborate on neighborhood projects or discuss infrastructure-related topics while exchanging ideas with one another.... Justin Caniglia, MCC’s Continuing Education Coordinator, explains that the Freight Farm is a cutting-edge farm operating on computer systems. “We have total control over our dashboard,” he adds. Daphne Cook, Director of Continuing Education at MCC confirms that it’s the first of its kind in Omaha to be used as an educational program classroom!
MCC’s new Certification for the Sustainability program, coupled with other learning opportunities available to all ages, will be significantly enhanced by the presence of a shipping container. As Cook expressed: “Most people won’t have their own personal shipping container. But they can still access its concepts and learn how to apply them in the comforts of home through education.”

Kail Walker, a local real estate agent, and his team are undertaking an ambitious project to provide Omaha with affordable housing and increased sustainability in the form of container homes. With 10 million unused shipping containers around the globe, bringing them to the city would not only help reduce waste but it would also give low-income families access to decent living conditions.... Not only are container homes significantly more cost-effective to construct, but they also take considerably shorter periods of time. While a conventional house could take anywhere between 4 and 14 months to complete, it would take no longer than two months for a container home. Currently, these types of homes are being built in the south–cities like Austin and Dallas, as well as Arizona cities, included–so why not start this project in Omaha? Doing so will enable the city to seize its moment under the spotlight and increase its visibility!
