The Port is developing a new off-dock container support facility on 24.5 acres of Port-owned land in the Tideflats area, near Thorne Road and Maxwell Way. This new facility will improve container port operations by providing space away from the dock for storing, staging, and processing containers and chassis. This will help reduce supply chain congestion by easing ship, terminal, rail, and road traffic.... Additionally, the facility aims to lower air emissions from ships, trucks, rail, and yard equipment, enhancing the safety and reliability of goods movement in and out of the Port. As part of the project, the Port has already created the Lower Wapato Creek habitat site, preserving over 110 native trees and planting around 150,000 trees, shrubs, and other plants to support local wildlife and the environment.

The Port of Tacoma is bursting with a never-ending influx of thousands of shipping containers, some empty and others fully loaded – an extreme consequence caused by the COVID-19 pandemic that has driven up prices and created product shortages. An array of factors triggered by the pandemic have resulted in more containers coming into Tacoma than leaving it.... The shipping industry thrives on the dependability of 40-foot steel containers, which can be swiftly unloaded from ships and then distributed via trucks or trains. These vessels arrive in Tacoma loaded with Asian furniture or electronics and leave carrying frozen potatoes or paper goods. Their efficient flow requires matching transports to come and go according to schedule, as well as personnel who load and transport items. A balanced supply and demand is essential for success within this system.
