Innovative social housing made from recycled shipping containers is set to be introduced in the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver. Atira Women’s Resource Society will construct a magnificent seven-storey building with 56 upcycled shipping containers at the corner Hastings St. and Hawks Ave., revolutionizing affordable living solutions in this troubled neighborhood.... A total of 14 two-bedroom units, measuring a generous 420 square feet each and seven micro units at 280 square feet apiece will be constructed out of shipping containers. Every studio unit consists of two 8’x20′ container sections while the larger two bedroom homes are made up with three containers. In order to make this accessible for all income levels, rental rates have been set accordingly – $375/monthly for singles and $570/monthly for a person living with one child; both within the shelter component range in British Columbia’s welfare system. To promote community engagement amongst tenants, an amenity room has also been designed alongside an internal courtyard filled with garden plots providing nature buffers throughout the complex.
