When Laurenne Mercier decided to move into her own place in early 2021, she realized that renting a traditional house would not be practical for her. Then, serendipity occurred: while on a walk in Killarney with her mother, they passed by an ad for the perfect rental property Calgary’s first laneway house completely constructed with shipping containers. Unbeknownst to them both at the time, it was only moments away from becoming Mercier’s new home!... For Chad Saunders, the owner of a residential property, creating value in his yard without compromising its use was always on his mind. To fulfill this vision, he turned shipping containers and constructed an entire laneway house from three separate units that were completely fabricated on-site. He wanted tenants to be able to enjoy their own space while also sharing access to his family’s backyard; thus ensuring everyone could feel at home within the same area!
