The city of Memphis has outlined a plan to re-energize the downtown area and Mississippi River Parks by introducing open-air dining pavilions made out of shipping containers. In their letter of intent, they state that this project is meant to “bring people back downtown and to the Mississippi River” in order to transform public spaces along its banks.
The ‘Memphis Riverfront Concept’ is a plan to link and guide development while boosting its ecological, commercial, cultural, and recreational aspects.... This park will be changed into an energetic social center filled with exceptional areas that can accommodate various activities like casual sports events or small-scale gatherings. In addition to the pavilions made of shipping containers, they are also planning on building a tree house above the playground area in the park for added fun!
The shipping containers will be used as dining pavilions, creating an exciting new way to enjoy the outdoors and view the Mississippi River. They are planning on using recycled materials as much as possible throughout this construction process in order to keep sustainability a priority while still providing a remarkable experience for park-goers.

A visionary entrepreneur has big plans to revolutionize the Memphis Medical District; his novel concept entails building a two-story, 14-unit apartment complex entirely from repurposed shipping containers. This bold endeavor would explore uncharted territory in terms of how these iconic metal boxes are being utilized for both commercial and residential purposes in Memphis.
Fred Spikner is petitioning the Board of Adjustment to obtain a special-use permit that would allow him to construct apartments from metal containers at 126 N. Bellevue. These dwellings will feature four two-story units with 800 square feet and ten single-level units measuring 640 square feet respectively.... With an already established history in this area, having Park Place Recycling and Logistics located at 815 E Georgia along with his own embroidery business on 1210 Madison, Mr.Spinkeer has proven himself as a reliable member of the community ready for new challenges ahead!
The city’s plan to enliven its downtown and nearby Mississippi River Parks includes the integration of shipping containers into open-air dining pavilions. By utilizing these unique spaces for recreation, gatherings, and activities by the riverbank it is anticipated that visitors will be naturally drawn back to this part of town.
