The 60th New Orleans Home & Garden Show kicks off and one of the highlights will be a village built from shipping containers. Show Manager Mike Zalaznik says there will be shipping containers transformed into everything from a yoga studio to a fishing camp!
People are drawn towards the container homes trend due to their ability to provide a comfortable lifestyle while taking up minimal space. Landscape architect Seth Rodewald-Bates understands this quite well as he and his wife have been celebrating their first year of living large in a measly 720-square-foot home made out of two freight containers.... Rodewald-Bates explains that the energy-efficient home is equipped with space-saving appliances and has made him and his wife more aware of their stuff. “It’s definitely a trend to reduce clutter in our lives, as well as conserve resources,” he affirms.
Not only was the couple impressed with the idea of helping the environment and creating a one-of-a-kind home, they were also drawn to upcycling something prevalent in New Orleans. Rodewald-Bates shared her enthusiasm for this project: “I enjoyed Legos as I was growing up so this felt like an awesome adult-sized test!

Louisiana, Port of New Orleans, and two major maritime companies recently declared their intention to jointly fund the construction of a $1.8 billion container facility, the Louisiana International Terminal, in Violet on the lower Mississippi River.
The project under the guidance of Gov. John Bel Edwards is estimated to manage between 180,000 and 280,000 containers in its initial year; when completed it aims to support 1.2 million containers or 2 million TEUs (20-foot equivalent units).... Utilizing the 50 feet depth of the Lower Mississippi River Ship Channel avoids bridge height restrictions further upriver allowing access to six Class I railroads and four interstate highways.
They are swiftly making progress on the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers environmental review project, and construction is slated to begin in 2025 with operations commencing by 2028.
