They often say that to create art, you need creative and innovative thinking. However, in downtown Phoenix, artists take it a step further by literally crafting their artwork inside the box! In an unremarkable gravel lot near Roosevelt and 5th Streets stand three massive shipping containers– Sarah Hurwitz quickly recognized this area as her new canvas for creation. After some effort with the heavy latch on one of them, she opened the door – entirely inspired by what lay beyond it.
Upon reflecting on her childhood, the concept of making a life-size diorama box came to mind and that’s exactly what she did! Now when you step inside her art exhibit, it is like stepping into another world.... Colorful paper leaves and toadstools line the walls as hidden treasures roost in the trees with animal sounds playing in the background; giving off an airy yet professional ambiance quite unlike any elementary school project from Hurwitz’s past. This unique exhibition was inspired by time spent creating exhibits for children’s museums around town.
The Roosevelt Row Community Development Corporation has provided grant money to contract a variety of artists who will present their artwork in the containers each month. Hurwitz, an artist with upcoming exhibitions at two traditional galleries, found this particular showcase especially unique. When night falls and darkness takes over, the container radiates white light that stands out amongst its surroundings – creating a captivating atmosphere for viewers to observe artistry like never before!
