When Julianna Carlson departed her parents’ Delridge home to pursue a college education in Santa Barbara, she never thought the West Coast sunshine would become dull. However, when the Pacific Northwesterner graduated in 2015 and returned home, something was different – nothing seemed familiar anymore. As homes within her budget weren’t up to par with what she wanted for herself and family, Carlson made an unconventional decision; despite having no architectural experience or training whatsoever, this political science major drew out plans for building her own unique dwelling from recycled shipping containers!... Carlson acquired six 20-foot shipping containers and had them trucked in and laid out within two days during the spring of 2017. Although window openings were pre-cut to meet his particular specifications, the internal buildout comprising drywall for external walls, plumbing, electrical installation took almost a year due to difficulty getting correct permits; it turns out that local authorities weren’t sure how to handle such a residential container home.
Carlson left the external aspects of the shipping container home untouched, with four at the bottom and two stacked on top. However, a quaint nautical vibe was created within these walls. The handrail to reach upstairs is mirroring those found in ferries; charming cargo boats have been artfully painted onto an accent wall downstairs; and if you peek inside the master bedroom walk-in closet, you’ll be captivated by its porthole window that transports one into feeling like they are at sea!
