Shipping container architecture is on the rise in Detroit, and one of the most exciting additions is The Fountain Detroit. This 40-foot-long decommissioned steel-shipping container replaced the seasonal Beach Bar & Grill in downtown Campus Martius Park and opened its doors on May 27th, 2016, and operated through mid-October.

As the first-ever Detroit shipping container restaurant and bar, The Fountain promised an exciting new dining experience with live music for food lovers in the city. While the menu underwent tweaks, the launched website teased “snack boxes” filled with items such as charcuterie and cheese, pierogis, salads, paninis, grilled Corridor Sausages, ice cream, and burgers.

The Fountain Detroit was part of an overall revamp of the Fountain Bistro and its concessions, which were sold to the 800 Parc restaurant group in February 2016. The plans for the flagship restaurant included a new design, a permanent enclosure for the outside patio, new windows for a more “open air” feel, a larger kitchen, and updates to the floors, ceiling, and bar.

Shipping container architecture is becoming an increasingly popular building method in Detroit, with several other projects. In 2016, Detroit Shipping Company debuted as a shipping container food hall in Cass Corridor. Additionally, local restaurant startup Social Sushi had once courted the idea of putting a shipping container restaurant in Roosevelt Park, and several container condos arrived nearby in the summer of 2015.
The unique dining experience at The Fountain Detroit attracted foodies, local artists, and architecture enthusiasts alike. If you were ever in Detroit during the summer months of 2016, you could have stopped by and checked out the city’s first-ever shipping container restaurant and bar.
