Inspired by their first foray into social entrepreneurship, the Wilsons are striving to repurpose empty shipping containers and transform them into homes for those experiencing homelessness. Their story began when they created "weekend survival kits" filled with food that over 100 homeless children pick up at school every Friday to take home to their families. Now, they have taken this mission a step further in an effort to make a lasting difference in the lives of others.
With the support of the Maryland Food Bank, the Wilsons have established a backpack program and are now searching for associates to transform 40-foot-long cargo containers into homes.... To make this dream come true, they've asked Jay Orr from ARQ Architects to create plans for a line of container modifications that will fit on what once were vacant row house foundations after their deconstruction or demolition by Baltimore City. The stability and movability these containers provide give them an edge ideal for such uses, yet with one condition they must be designed in such a way as not to draw attention to themselves being cargo boxes.
After conducting extensive research, the Wilsons determined that they can convert cargo containers into homes for around $20,000 each. They want to provide families with a rent-to-own option when it comes to these container houses - not as temporary shelters but as permanent housing. To make this dream come true, they visited City Hall and spoke with officials about what would be required of them in order to start their project; happily receiving a positive response along with some helpful advice on partners that could help bridge the disparity between affordable housing needs within the city limits.

When Thomas Keller and his team of architects, Envelope A+D, were pressed for time to build a stunning new kitchen for French Laundry's 20th-anniversary celebration, they came up with an inventive solution: cooking in shipping containers! Now one of the world's top restaurants is operating out of these structures.
Four shipping containers artfully combined together, you'd almost think the restaurant had not gone through a single alteration. That is partially due to the fact that they managed to transition the prior kitchen's equipment layout in its entirety over to this new spot.... David Breeden, Chef de Cuisine at French Laundry commented that his greatest difficulty was altering where each dish goes for final touches before being presented to guests; previously it ran from left to right while now it needs to go right-to-left.
At first, it seemed impossible to close the restaurant for more than three months; however, six and then one year felt too long. After researching alternative venues, they realized that their current building already had a dining room - all they needed was a temporary kitchen. The architects came up with an innovative idea: utilizing shipping containers! Once the source of materials was secured and someone was available to modify them, their dream became a reality.
