SOUTHBOUND, the new eatery from Mac’s Speed Shop’s team of restaurant aficionados, is brimming with a delightful and vibrant color palette. Oranges in all their luminous hues combined with an array of blues will create the perfect atmosphere for indulging in its California-inspired Baja menu.
Chef Kevin Kuruc was inspired to create the Southern California-style menu for SouthBound, on South Boulevard next to Mac’s original location, when he came across an old 1970s image of a skateboarder passing by two beachgoers. In order to bring his vision to fruition, Kuruc traveled out west and sampled over a dozen tacos in one day!...
Thus equipped with all this delicious inspiration from San Diego’s street food scene, he returned home ready to put together the perfect Baja/SoCal menu at SouthBound. Now this same mural is proudly displayed as part of the building itself.
The hallmark of Southern Californian cuisine is its freshness and Mexican flavor, so SouthBound will be no exception. With ten mouthwatering tacos on the menu (plus a vegetarian option!), almost all featuring cabbage lightly drizzled with lime juice and olive oil, you’ll have plenty of delicious options to choose from! But that’s not all: in the center of our restaurant which seats up to 240 people, there will also be a self-serve salsa bar hosting six different levels of heat – ranging from mild to ‘stay away’ hot – as well as two other sauces featured directly onto the menu. And if that wasn’t enough? The drinks selection promises something for everyone; we know it will make an excellent complement to your meal!

Surrounded by the vibrant October sun and nestled in the “armpit of Central Piedmont Community College” lies D.I. von Briesen’s towering abode–a shipping container he skillfully converted himself, which is illuminated gracefully by a lozenge-shaped window atop its beige facade. Upon closer inspection, one will find an array of solar panels on its roof as well as the dirt beneath it; truly making this breathtaking building not only energy efficient but also embedded in nature itself!...
For 44-year-old D.I., a Web Technologies instructor at CPCC, the container is more than just an idea– it’s an experience. Not only has this prototype home consumed 5 years of his time and energy, but it also reflects D.I. ‘s passion for alternative forms of housing that was sparked by growing up in a New Mexico commune with limited private space. A melding of interests and ambition, the shipping container makes possible what once seemed impossible: providing safe shelter without taking away independence or privacy from its inhabitant(s).
