The 28 containers that were customized in Detroit have been shipped to the Herman Kiefer site and are now ready for assembly into a theater. Arranged as two-storied circles, these containers will form seating galleries and provide an area for backstage activities allowing up to 400 viewers at once!... An additional audience of 800-1000 people can be accommodated by making room for “groundlings,” which is what audiences were called centuries ago when standing close to the stage.
Vail chose Detroit as the site of his theater due to its invaluable musical and theatrical heritage, its recognition by UNESCO as a City of Design, and its elevated demand for Shakespearean performances. It is estimated that 40 percent of attendees at Stratford Festival in Ontario come from Michigan, primarily Detroit.
