Located at the intersection of 16th and Queen Street, stands an old metal Quonset hut known as ‘Outpost’ by its creators. Within this historic structure lies a new craft beer bar called Alcove Beer Garden. Chris Batten (owner of Bespoke Coffee) is brother to Billy Batten (who owns the bar in the back), providing insight into why these two businesses have come together beneath one roof.
On the west side of the building, right beside the bar, five shipping containers are artfully stacked one on top of another.... One is perched at a slant atop another with an internal wooden staircase leading to what will eventually become an upper patio – above a soon-to-open burger eatery. Ellie Craig from Front Street Brewery and President of Cape Fear Craft Beer Alliance likened this unusual structure to something that could exist only in a child’s imagination!
Leslie Smith, the mastermind developer behind the Cargo District, a southwest Ardmore neighborhood with plentiful shipping container-themed apartments and start-ups boasts 85 commercial leases thus far. Establishments such as End of Days Distillery, Queen Street Barber Shop, Coworx, Encore Magazine and various design & technology firms are among them. His brilliant work has become immensely popular in the area!

Introducing 1602 Queen Street: The Cargo District, an innovative urban mixed-use concept in Wilmington developed by L.S. Smith Inc and designed by Rob Romero of Romero Architecture is now pre-leasing the first residential portion of their project with nine stand-alone apartments composed entirely out of eighteen locally sourced shipping containers! Get ready to experience a whole new level of living that mixes modernity with sustainability.
The Cargo District’s plans involve a unique blend of retail, office and residential spaces by repurposing recycled intermodal shipping containers. This includes the construction of nine one-bedroom “Live + Work” units comprising two 20-foot containers plus other traditional materials for roughly 600 square feet in living area.... These residences are now available to be rented out at $1,050 per month–including utilities such as water, sewerage disposal services, trash collection and basic internet access!
On the ground level, each of the Live + Work units will be equipped with a full-sized kitchen complete with reverse osmosis filtration system, spacious living room setup and paved patio. Moreover, there is also ample off-street parking for one vehicle as well as a small gardening area. As you ascend to the second floor, you are graced by another bedroom outfitted with a full bathroom along with a walk-in closet and private balcony that feature a stackable washer/dryer unit. To top it all off Smith has plans to add 50-70 more 1 or 2 bedrooms apartments through utilization of over 200 containers!
